A twenty-minute ride by streetcar will take you from the bustling Amsterdam center to IJburg, a cluster of six artificial islands in the IJ lake. Surrounded by water, it feels like being on an island holiday. Even though it’s still a part of the Amsterdam-Oost (Amsterdam East) borough! City life and a relaxing beach are close to this uncluttered modern apartment Farida calls home.

The serene, tidy interior is juxtaposed with colorful and fun details, like bold kitchen tiles. Clever storage ideas keep things orderly. An avid salsa dancer, she has a penchant for the New York salsa scene, and photos and keepsakes show off her travels.

The big windows make her apartment bright and cheerful; Farida loves to chill in her spacious living room, basking in all the light and enjoying the views. And keeping the furnishings minimal means there is ample space for a private dance floor!

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Minimal, modern, uncluttered.

Inspiration: Interior design websites, furniture catalogs and Pinterest.

Favorite Element: Colored combination of backsplash kitchen tiles. Piano.

Biggest Challenge: I am still organizing the laundry/storage room and tidying up so it will look as uncluttered as the rest of my apartment.

What Friends Say: Your apartment is so big!

Biggest Embarrassment: I’m not embarrassed about anything; this is my home and I love every part of it.

Proudest DIY: I don’t DIY, but I’m proud to say I’ve assembled almost everything myself, except the kitchen and built-in wardrobe in my bedroom.

Biggest Indulgence: Roller blinds in the living room, which due to the unusual size of the windows were quite expensive.

Best Advice: Let your home reflect who you are. Take enough time completing your interior to your liking. You don’t have to buy everything at once.
