Alexis and her husband Walt moved to his hometown of Houston from NYC almost five years ago to start a family. Walt, a former professional photographer, fulfilled a dream of his to become a fireman. Alexis, an interior designer, was nervous but excited about rooting down in The Woodlands, a large suburb outside of Houston. The allure of a quiet, wooded neighborhood appealed to Alexis and her husband, having come from living a fast-paced life in New York City. Over the last four years, Alexis has worked hard to replace the builder-grade features that came with her home with her personal aesthetic. One of her biggest needs is the space to create her homewares line Alexis Sassard, comprised of gorgeous linens and striking fiber wall hangings, among other endeavors.

Their home is rich in texture, art, and feels very sophisticated without being too filled with stuff. One striking element of their home is their fireplace, a project that Walt redid himself. While the couple have hired professionals to do a lot of the renovating, they aren’t afraid to take on some DIY projects on their own.

Perhaps the thing that stands out the most about the design of this home is the compatibility of Alexis’ and her husband’s tastes — his is rich in Americana, hers is bold in modern and mid-century. It works in perfect harmony to make one gorgeous home and family.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: If mid-century modern and traditional were married, and Americana was the side chick.

Inspiration: Simple lines, lots of texture and depth. The drawings and paintings of Cy Twombly really inspire us.

Favorite Element: Our fireplace. Before my husband laid the tile surround, he wrote all of our names on the wood foundation. I’m not the most sentimental person and even that had me teary-eyed.

Biggest Challenge: Telling my designer mind to chill out. I tell everyone it can be such a curse sometimes.

What Friends Say: “Your house is always so clean!”

Biggest Embarrassment: It’s not always so clean. I have two kids!

Proudest DIY: The raised hearth on the fireplace. My husband poured blood, sweat, and every curse word imaginable into the tile and woodwork of that project.

Biggest Indulgence: Pillows. I can’t get enough of them.

Best Advice: : A teacher in design school told me once to create spaces mindfully, with purpose. I keep that in mind a lot.

Dream Sources: Lindsey Adelman for lighting, Beni Ourain rugs, 1stDibs for impeccable vintage finds, and anything from Dwell Studio.
