When Pam and Michael purchased their 1906 historic home in one of Portland’s most desired neighborhoods, they knew they were signing up to tackle a huge project. The house had been a rental for many years, and had fallen into great neglect — the floors were so layered with soot and grime that the wood could not be seen, ceilings had water damage and rot, and there were literally holes in the floors, revealing glimpses into the next level of the home. The couple, who both have backgrounds in design, were up to the challenge though, and jumped into a major renovation, where they touched nearly every surface of the expansive home.

Pam’s experience with interior design and housewares (she has her own line of textiles) served her well throughout the remodel of the old house. She chose finishes that harmonize with the hundred year old Craftsman style, and highlighted and restored original features whenever possible. The couple’s furniture, accessories and art (much of which was made by Michael) add even more modernity to the space, while still allowing the home’s 1906 charm to shine through.

Favorite Element: The detail in the moldings /millwork and the over-scaled front door.

Biggest Challenge: Everything was a challenge! This home was not updated for 30+ years, it needed everything. Electrical, HVAC, roof, kitchen, bathrooms, floors refinished, and all woodwork was sanded down to natural wood and repainted.

What Friends Say: They can’t believe the transformation — the house was in shambles.

Biggest Embarrassment: Landscaping — the front and backyard, it’s not done yet.

Proudest DIY: All the paintings in the house were done by Michael Castellon. Textiles and accessories were created by House of Castellon, our modern heirloom homeware and accessory company right here in Portland, Oregon.

Biggest Indulgence: The white Murano glass chandelier in the dining room.

Best Advice: Work with good professionals, they will be worth their weight in gold.
