"Modern Romantic" Collectors Downsize for a Downtown High-Rise

Name: Pelin Binnet, Tim Kimball and their three cats Jiggy, Catherine Deneuve, and Henry Kittinger
Location: Downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota
Size: 900 square feet
Years lived in: 6 months, renting

Pelin (creator of the design, retail and beauty blog The Dapper Post) and Tim have a history with the building they currently live in. After arriving from Turkey, it was in this building that Pelin first lived. After she and Tim got married they moved into a different unit...before moving to a much larger home in the Minneapolis suburbs six years later. But it didn't take long for Pelin and Tim to trade that two-bedroom house in the suburbs for a small space in the city again...and they came back to the same building!

Pelin and Tim worked hard to downsize for their move, losing a lot of square footage and an entire bedroom in the process. In their new space they decided to forgo the traditional dining area and turn that space into a mini library, which was a feature from their suburban abode that they didn't want to compromise.

Despite the hard work, Pelin and Tim were up for the challenge to pare down their belongings and get back to the walk-able, pedestrian-filled neighborhood they love. But what makes their home — and downsizing experience — so extraordinary, is that even though they did pare down their belongings when they moved into this space, this is no minimally minded interior! Pelin and Tim love their collections, which fill their rental with personality.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Modern romantic

Inspiration: Domino and Living Etc. magazines and anything that has neutral pastels and modern lines on Pinterest. This was the specific inspiration piece I started from:

It was a house tour in Living Etc magazine in 2013. It belongs to interior stylist Hillary Robertson. I've never seen a house I liked more in my life.

Favorite Element: Tim: The marble shelving behind the sofa because the way it worked out looks like it was meant to be there

Pelin: My corner of the living room/sofa with the stag head, the bar cart, and the artwork — with the 1000 piece, old Ottoman painting puzzle I put together. That corner of the sofa is where you can find me most days. I also love the color of the bedroom.

Biggest Challenge: Making sure all the furniture we wanted to keep fit in the available space. It barely does.

What Friends Say: A lot of my friends really like the place. The pink sofa and the IKEA-hack gold glass bookshelf are what they comment on the most. But my best friend also said she could never live in this house because there is way too much stuff — which my mom agrees :)

Biggest Embarrassment: That the bedroom is a mess most of the time!

Proudest DIY: Mine is the Ottoman painting puzzle. I love seeing it each time. I think Tim's is the marble shelves, which he put on the wall.

Biggest Indulgence: The artwork together probably was a bigger expense than any one piece of furniture. Other than that, the pink West Elm sofa. We did not need another sofa in the house but I fell in love with it.

Best Advice: Do paint dark colors in small spaces — especially bedrooms. And always make use of rolling racks when you have limited space. There are so many cool rolling racks on sale now.

Dream Sources: Restoration Hardware mixed with CB2 and West Elm for furniture and decor, Saatchi Art, Society 6 and Easy for art, Anthropologie, Fish Eddy, and West Elm for kitchen.
