Charlotte and Nicolas share their cozy and playful Parisian apartment with their soon-to-be-two-year-old daughter, Louison. Their interior design style is geometric with bits of childhood magic and graphic novel thrown in. The space is light and colorful, but equally as functional. Charlotte and Nicolas both have backgrounds in theater and set design, so when designing their apartment’s interior, they knew exactly how to arrange the space so that it was both livable and aesthetically pleasing.
When Charlotte and Nicolas sent over their survey, I thought there was some sort of translation error — they couldn’t possibly have only lived in their completely furnished and designed apartment for five months! But it’s true. With their professional experience in set design, they’re very familiar with time and budget sensitive projects and found it easy to create their home.
Quite the creative duo, they enjoy making the majority of their furniture and decor themselves. One of their proudest DIY projects is the hut in Louison’s room. It can be used as a play house for their daughter, but also functions as a guest bed when they have visitors. One of the ends detaches and a mattress extension is brought in from the other room. Creative ways to save space is important when living in Paris! In fact, the couple divided the living room into two separate spaces with a shelving unit. This design trick created privacy for their bedroom, full bedroom closet storage, and a little workspace for Charlotte.
The apartment is located in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, which has traditionally been home to many artists, so this district couldn’t be a better fit for the couple. Along with their own artistic additions, the apartment itself boasts many beautiful and original architectural details. One of their favorites is the original fireplace mantel in their bedroom. The red and yellow stained-glass windows are lovely, too.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: We have many influences; we like a perfect balance between functionality and beauty. We like Nordic style, and that spaces tell stories as they do in our job, set design and drawing.
Inspiration: We like to read architecture reviews, and watch the world around us, in the street, at the museum, and on the internet. We take a long time to speak together about design to make sure it’s exactly what we both want.
Favorite Element: We love our daughter’s room. There are a lot of things in there that we made for her during the pregnancy and since she was born.
Biggest Challenge: Finding the right light bulb.
What Friends Say: “It is really you who made that?” and “Seriously, you’ve lived here for only one month??”
Biggest Embarrassment: We are such perfectionists, and we make everything three time before we’re satisfied.
Proudest DIY: A lot of little things, light fixtures, mobiles, cushions, coat hanger, Louison’s hut.
Biggest Indulgence: A few pieces of furniture.
Best Advice: Be happy in your home.
Dream Sources: Change of scene.
