Jeanette and Mikul have lived in their Emeryville open factory loft for a mere four months, but they sure have nailed down their own rhythm and routine. The two creatives run Sugar Sugar Studio, a rental space for video and still shoots, just off of the apartment’s kitchen area. The airy, one-room loft suits the couple and their love of minimalism and wabi-sabi design, and the whitewashed walls are a fitting backdrop for a few pops of color scattered throughout the space.
The openness of the space definitely matches Jeanette and Mikul’s sunny and welcoming dispositions. Their design sensibilities gravitate towards simple yet colorful choices, full of personality. The bright and stylishly outfitted space is a true reflection of the couple’s creative natures.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Minimal with quirky details, clean thrift
Inspiration: Wabi-Sabi design
Favorite Element: The giant factory window—I love watching the shadows from the window frame move all day and seeing moonlight shine through all night. It makes us feel like we are camping everyday!
Biggest Challenge: The direct sun is nice, but on a hot day—not so nice.
What Friends Say: “So, where is your closet?”
Biggest Embarrassment: Our shower is pretty bad.
Proudest DIY: Getting two low benches out of a tall table.
Biggest Indulgence: We really are not ones to buy designer anything. In fact, most of the studio décor is thrifted. If I had to choose anything I would say our fig tree and pot.
Best Advice: “Let it do the talking for you.” I do not remember where I read this simple quote, but it has really resonated with me over the years. I apply it to not only decorating the studio, but when it comes to studying and working in the fashion industry. I love when people point things out at a store and say “That’s very you.” I think it’s something really special when the space is a reflection of one’s personality.
