There are dreamers and there are doers. Ariene Bethea fits into the latter. Ariene brought her dream to life through her designer furnishings storefront, Dressing Rooms Interiors Studio. She has been called a “design maven,” whose arrival is “changing the face of design in the South.” Her style is abundant throughout her residence in Charlotte, which she shares with her husband, Daren, (a dreamer and a doer in his own right). Daren provides his expertise in chiropractic medicine through Charlotte’s first mobile chiropractic clinic. Passion defines Ariene and Daren’s home and life.

Ariene has worked on many creative projects in the Charlotte area and is known for having an eye for collecting. “Le Huntress,” is an appropriate descriptor of her passion and style. Ariene is originally from Washington, DC, and her childhood home was shaped by her mother’s taste in African and Asian pieces. Ariene and Daren have created a thoughtful home full of both vintage and cultural pieces.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: California Vintage Global Glam

Inspiration: The basic ingredients for the space came from my favorite color, blue, and my love of black and white. The global influence is directly from my mom. My childhood home was filled with both African and Asian decor. I’ve inherited many of her pieces.

Favorite Element: I love all the light that fills the room. In the morning the walls are more blue and at night they feel more gray.

Biggest Challenge: Selling my finds and not keeping them for sure! I have a rule, if something new comes in, something else has to go. It has made me a ruthless editor of things. I only keep what I would take in a fire.

What Friends Say: Friends are always amazed at how different the house looks since their last visit. They also comment that they feel calm and relaxed.

Biggest Embarrassment: Well, the master bedroom isn’t finished and I want to replace the carpet eventually. It just isn’t a priority right now.

Proudest DIY: The gold ceramic stool from Target that I glammed up with stone coasters from HomeGoods.

Biggest Indulgence: Custom built-in cabinetry. There was zero storage and I needed a significant amount.

Best Advice: Every room needs at least one vintage piece and a touch of black to ground the space. And if you are having trouble finding the right piece for a room, try a plant (live not faux) in place of an object. Plants add color, texture, life and purify the air.

Dream Sources: Ingrid Baars, Malene B., Florida Regency, Southloop Loft, Scout Design Studio, Slate Interiors and Hermans Steel Garage to name a few.
