Dolores refuses to follow trends. As an art director, set decorator and interior designer, she’s able to see her home as a blank canvas. And it’s a bright, light-filled space she’s intentionally filled with elements that feature character and history.

Working with her partner Marco, an architect who co-founded the firm mcd / studio in 2013, they created a home that doesn’t just look good, but feels good and flows well, too.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Our house is full of vintage and retro elements, but I don’t know exactly how to describe our style.

Inspiration: I don’t really have an “inspiration source.” I have my own vision where I get inspired by textures and colors. Because of my job I have to search for a lot of images and they get stuck in my head; I think I can say that’s a sort of inspiration.

Favorite Element: Right now I could say the golden planters; I have just gotten them. But I don’t really have a favorite element.

Biggest Challenge: Marco, my partner! Having to decorate a place with another human being was, at the beginning, a little bit hard.

What Friends Say: Everybody loves this house! It’s a place where we have a lot of parties and people enjoy coming. I’m a little bit of a control freak but I try to relax because I love to spend time with my friends and family.

Biggest Embarrassment: The electrical outlets. There are not many, so we had to put extension cords all over the house.

Proudest DIY: The shelves in the living room. We bought the wood and the brackets and we installed them.

Biggest Indulgence: The dining chairs. They were very hard to find; they are originals and they were really expensive.

Best Advice: Don’t follow trends! Try to be patient and take your time. Natural and classic elements are best.
