An Austin House Evolves into California Cool

An Austin House Evolves into California Cool

Reagen Taylor

Name: Katie Taylor
Location: Austin, Texas
Size: 1,400 square feet
Years Lived In: Owned 7 years

When you first walk into Katie's home, you just can't help but want to move right in. Each room is drenched in cheery, loud, earthy California-vibe colors, and decorated with hilariously sassy signs, brass pineapples of all sizes, and an abundance of sweet, little details. It's the kind of place you want to skip work and stay in to host a girls-only hangout day.

Though this house originally had a "Texan in Tuscany" look, she's transformed the more traditional bones of this home into a truly unique space that reflects her personality, thanks to her ability to collect, acquire and arrange. Not everyone can mix vintage and new so deftly, but Katie does it in a way that's a breath of fresh air.

My Style: Collected Eclectic

Inspiration: I follow a ton of insanely creative designers on social media, and I'm constantly inspired by their feeds! Emily Henderson is someone who immediately comes to mind — I love everything she does and am constantly amazed at how she's able to put rooms together.

Favorite Element: It's a toss up between my marble-top tulip and our campaign dresser night stands...Both have been a bucket list items for years.

Biggest Challenge: Resisting the urge to do a complete overhaul on the kitchen and bathrooms! The original style of my place was a little more "Texan in Tuscany" than I cared for, and the tile and countertops still reflect that. But, I have to remind myself I'm not going to be here forever, and it's not worth the investment at the moment.

What Friends Say: That's a hard one! I think most people appreciate my attention to the little details. I always like to make sure every little space is styled "just right." They also compliment how I mix vintage finds with newer, modern pieces.

Biggest Embarrassment: I'll be the first to admit that my style has "evolved" since I first purchased my home seven years ago. Looking back at pictures of my home decor back then — I cringe. However, now, my biggest embarrassment is my slight hoarding tendency. While everything — that's visible — is styled and in its place, don't open the brass trunk, the dresser drawers...or look in the garage. BUT, in my defense, I likely own any crafting supply or vintage serving piece you could ever need — so if you're throwing a DIY dinner party for 50, I've totally got you covered. Did you ever see that episode of Friends when they discover Monica's hall closet that she's secretly been shoving stuff in there for years? Yep. Please don't call A&E on me...

Proudest DIY: I can't think of one thing in particular, but there are a lot of things around here that have been transformed with a quick coat of gold spray paint. And I know technically it's not a DIY, but I think I've earned my Masters degree in building IKEA furniture. Not to brag...

Biggest Indulgence: The aforementioned marble-top tulip table. But it was worth. every. penny.

Best Advice: Don't be afraid of color, and let your space reflect your personality. And do your research! If there's a piece that you love, shop around, wait for sales, scour Craigslist. I'm all about finding a deal!
