Name: Liza Monteagudo and David E. Peterson + Dog, Paco
Location: Grant Park — Atlanta, Georgia
Size: 1,100 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years
Designer and DIY guru Liza Monteagudo and abstract painter David E. Peterson have created an eclectic, creative home in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta. It’s a treasure trove of David’s paintings, art from Liza’s home of Puerto Rico, carefully chosen antiques, and plenty of clever DIYs.
Blending a mix of prints, patterns, and textures in her home, Liza navigates the realm of color beautifully. Her talents lend themselves not only to her home decor but to her glorious garden, as well. And thanks to his eye for color and texture, David’s abstract pieces integrate seamlessly with Liza’s aesthetic, truly making this home a work of passion and vision—a home from the heart.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Eclectic Mod Cottage
Inspiration: Our journey through life together is an endless source of inspiration. Also, as an interior designer and an artist, we both share a love for color and texture.
Favorite Element: We love that our house sits on top of a hill above street level. Being on top of the hill gives us a view of the tree canopy in our neighborhood. The large old trees are a haven for the birds. It is almost like living in a tree house. The flow of our house from the front porch to the interior to the back garden connects all of the spaces.
Biggest Challenge: We lived in a large rental for nine years. When we found our little dream house, we had to give away, donate, and purge a lot of items. It is very liberating to edit down your possessions to the ones that you truly love. Also our garden—when we moved in the front yard and backyard were dirt. We did all the gardening and hardscaping ourselves. It was completely worth all of the blood, sweat and tears.
What Friends Say: Cozy, fun, down to earth, happy.
Biggest Embarrassment: When we decided to buy a house, we made a point to buy a house that had a studio, garage or basement. The house that we bought did not have any of these spaces. We ended up using the back office as a studio, storage and sorting room. When we entertained, we would lock the door to that room. Finally, we had a studio built last spring and now that room is a functional office/guest room.
Proudest DIY: We installed a working chandelier from a tree limb in our back yard. We also made a custom headboard in our bedroom. Setting up dimmers on all of our overhead lighting makes a big difference in creating the ambiance.
Biggest Indulgence: Our art collection and the art studio in the backyard
Best Advice: It takes time to fill a home with things that you love. Every item in your house should have a story.
Dream Sources: We would love to shop at antique markets in Spain and France and be able to buy art at Art Basel.
