When Chaney and her husband Charlie bought their house in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia in the fall of 2015, she saw the house as a chance to experiment and flex her creative muscles. It was in need of some major updating, but she saw the potential right away. They ended up getting a great deal on it, and then spent 30 days putting in all new hardwood flooring, painting just about every surface, replacing light fixtures, and fixing a bunch of little things before they moved in. About nine months after that, they did a full kitchen renovation as well.

Chaney runs her own company, Mix & Match Design Company. The philosophy behind her business is to make decorating affordable and approachable. She also writes a blog where she shares projects and practical tips on how to decorate your home. All skills that came in handy with this house.

And it’s not just the house that this couple loves: Fairmount is a great neighborhood because it is a mix of being walkable to downtown, yet maintains a distinct personality and a friendly neighborhood vibe. “We love being able to walk to so many places including spots like the famed Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Schuylkill River trail.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Eclectic Modern — I love a lot of different styles, but I tend to gravitate towards pieces with clean lines that still maintain a cozy vibe. I’m not afraid to throw an antique piece in near something super modern!

Inspiration: Amber Interiors, Emily Henderson, and Studio McGee are my current favorites.

Favorite Element: Our dining table and mix of vintage and modern chairs. We found the CB2 table on Craigslist and hauled it home in an UberXL (city living at its finest!).

Biggest Challenge: Our tiny bathroom. It’s the only one in the house, and it’s a tight squeeze for the two of us to use at the same time.

What Friends Say: Usually row houses are dark and cave-like, but yours feels so bright, airy, and cozy!

Biggest Embarrassment: The fact that it has taken me almost two years to swap out the cheap and dated brass door handles and hinges — they bothered me so much and looked terrible, but apparently not enough to update them right away!

Proudest DIY: Either the hand-painted wall treatment I did in the bathroom or the Sputnik-style light fixture I made for my office.

Biggest Indulgence: I’m such a bargain-hunter that I don’t tend to indulge very much, but I would probably say the quartz countertops in our kitchen. We renovated it last summer and that was one of my must-haves. It was definitely an investment, but now I never worry about messing them up — especially since we entertain a lot. They get some serious use and abuse!

Best Advice: Don’t be afraid to let your style evolve over time and swap things out when they no longer bring you joy. When my husband and I first got married seven years ago, I was all about the coastal farmhouse look, but now my style leans much more mid-century and modern and I’m slowly acquiring pieces that reflect that.
