If you wake up on an overcast Sunday morning in Los Angeles and are wondering where you can score a fresh slice of homemade pizza and a carefully crafted cappuccino, then please allow me to direct you to the home of Elizabeth Berger and Jeremy Roth. When I arrived at their West L.A. townhouse, they were still basking in the glow of a Mets playoff win the night before (Elizabeth is from Queens), and I wasn’t about to turn down the celebratory refreshments that they offered up.

Jeremy and Elizabeth—both television/movie screenwriters—have made their mark on this rental property, filling it with signs of their interest in art, theater, gardening, cooking, film, TV, and music. Their two striking Bengal cats seem right at home among the ample plant life that gives this townhouse its jungle-y vibe, while Wally the dog can be found lounging on the living room sofa or hanging out in his spot at the foot of Jeremy and Elizabeth’s bed.

A recent minor remodel (more on that here!) has brightened up the kitchen and dining room, and upgraded appliances and a much-needed ventilation hood have been game-changers for these two. Jeremy assumes the role of head chef in the house, while Elizabeth doubles as sous chef and lead taste-tester. From Rosh Hashanah dinner for ten on their rooftop to gnocchi and dumplings made from scratch, an average evening at Elizabeth and Jeremy’s features home cooking with a degree of quality and ambition that most would be proud to achieve even once a year. Real words out of their mouths: “We’re big into pretzel-crusted schnitzels.”

And did I mention the pizza? There’s always pizza. For the full effect, just try to imagine the smell of it as you peruse the photos of this cozy home.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Industrial jungle rustic.

Inspiration: Flea markets, cozy cafes, Jeremy’s family’s provençal farm, Elizabeth’s childhood home in Queens.

Favorite Element:

Jeremy: The painted Indian door coffee table in the living room.

Elizabeth: The upright wooden bookcase in the living room.

Biggest Challenge: Keeping the cats from destroying the furniture.

What Friends Say: “Oh wow! Love the mix of colors, textures and fabrics!” Actually, that’s our fantasy. What they really say is, “Cool place, are your cats always this loud?”

Biggest Embarrassment: Our three humidifiers, which are usually on display but were hidden for this shoot.

Proudest DIY: Exposed ventilation ducting for hood in kitchen.

Biggest Indulgence: Our Breville Barista Express espresso maker.

Best Advice: Cool is good, but warmth and coziness is even more important. And if you live with someone, always consult on bigger purchases but still try and sneak a few things in on your own.

Dream Sources: Melrose Trading Post and Rose Bowl Flea Market, Craigslist. Nothing feels more satisfying than finding something we love that has character and history.
