Dive into a world of brilliant colors displayed through the ancient form of block printing by Maelu Designs, a sustainable textile company by local Atlanta entrepreneur, Meghna Davé. The bold patterns in the home she shares with Jake are highlighted by a minimal and natural aesthetic, making this space modern with a sense of familiarity.

Meghna’s company focuses on creating modern and unique hand-printed pieces while staying gentle on the environment and supporting the artisans that make it all happen.

Inspired by their travels, Meghna and Jake have integrated their favorite elements from different cultures and places around the world, particularly India, into their East Atlanta home. Meghna’s family have been traveling back and forth from India her whole life, and that’s how she fell in love with the art of block printing. Along with Southern-style furniture, stark white walls and natural elements, the bold block print patterns create a balanced sense of harmony throughout the home.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Bohemian minimalist. We love clean white walls with color and interest added through textiles and art.

Inspiration: Traveling—we’re inspired by the places we stay and the architecture we come across on our travels. We try to bring back as many unique things as we can afford and fit into our suitcases. We also enjoy checking out local thrift stores and finding interesting items that speak to us.

Favorite Element: We both work from home so having enough space to comfortably accommodate for that is amazing. Also the natural light is wonderful and Lemmy (our pup) really enjoys the big fenced-in backyard!

Biggest Challenge: Trying to purchase furniture, decorations and necessities for a new home without spending a ton of money or accumulating junk we didn’t love. Also balancing our two aesthetics in a way that flows throughout the house.

What Friends Say: We like to think our friends are charmed by our house. They love that it’s cozy (and has a guest room for them) and we’ve gotten compliments on the bold and unexpected combinations we use in our decorating style.

Biggest Embarrassment: Our carport. It’s such an eyesore! We have dreams to expand the house and have it closed in one day.

Proudest DIY: Our kitchen. We tore down the cabinets against one wall and replaced them with open shelving made out of reclaimed wood. We also painted all the remaining cabinets white in addition to every single wall, door, ceiling and piece of trim in the house. Definitely proud of the hours and hours that were put into that project!

Biggest Indulgence: Aside from the house itself, our couch! It’s the one “new new” piece we purchased.

Best Advice: Take your time and decorate based on what feels right. It’s not worth it to spend a bunch of money on things that you don’t love or feel rushed to hang up artwork in a spot that doesn’t work. Also—shop Craigslist and well known/eclectic thrift stores in your neighborhood. There are so many gems and the inventory changes all the time!

Dream Sources: Bazaars and markets around the world

The home enters into the living room. The galvanized shelving is from Urban Outfitters. The record player stand is thrifted; they DIY’d it by removing drawers to hold records. (Image credit: Selena Kirchhoff)
