In my years of photographing spaces for Apartment Therapy, I’ve been to some pretty cool places, but never any place quite like this. Designer Harry Nuriev’s Brooklyn apartment is like a pop art wonderland, a sculpture garden that you can live inside. You may have seen Harry’s home before — or perhaps one of the spaces he’s designed as the founder of Crosby Studios — but this is a closer and longer look at an intriguing space filled with surprisingly affordable DIY ideas.

Almost every piece in the apartment is bespoke, created by Harry himself. The custom kitchen feels like nothing I’ve ever seen in a Brooklyn apartment, or truly in any apartment: just two rows of cabinets in Harry’s signature cobalt blue, floating serenely across from each other. Hanging above is a chandelier that, upon closer inspection, turns out to be made from BIC Pens, a testament to Harry’s ability to see great possibility in ordinary things.

The color scheme of bright blue and pink might seem a little unusual, but here it feels sophisticated, and even avant-garde. Those two colors tie together the apartment’s three main living spaces. A pink-tinted window casts rose-colored light into the kitchen, and the marble dining table is veined in cobalt blue.

Harry has taken a light hand with furnishings, but the apartment feels minimal and not sparse. The space is elegant but also playful, thanks to his furnishings’ inventive shapes and bold colors. His apartment is equal parts design showcase and design playground, a bold, inventive space where you can also make yourself right at home.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Inspiration: Raf Simons, Balenciaga.

Favorite Element: I love the sofa, the cubic chair, the BIC pens chandelier, and my marble dining table.

Biggest Challenge: It’s a fourth-floor walk-up. Getting the marble dining table up was a nightmare!

What Friends Say: They’re surprised by how large and free-flowing the space feels.

Proudest DIY: The chandelier made from BIC pens.

Biggest Indulgence: I’m heavily influenced by Norwegian and Japanese minimalism, and try not to overindulge with my designs, so I would say that hopefully I don’t have one.

Best Advice: Don’t be afraid of color. Buy art.

Dream Sources: I design a lot of my furniture myself, but often visit flea markets, which are great sources for accents.
