It seems difficult to believe that Daina and Justin Trout, co-founders of popular drink brand, Health-Ade Kombucha, only moved into their stunning Westside home five months ago. With each room more pulled together and well designed than the last, it seems as if this effortlessly styled home would have taken years to get every detail right. The combination of California boho meets mid-century chic hits all the right notes, while the open and airy aspects of the house play right into the bright nature of its residents.

Daina and Justin started Health-Ade Kombucha with their best friend, Vanessa, five years ago. At the time they both had other careers but they started making their own kombucha at home. Their friends liked it so much, they started working out of their pint-sized apartment and selling the kombucha at farmers markets. Business just kept growing and growing and the couple are thrilled that the success of their company has now allowed them to buy their own home in a desirable Los Angeles locale. The house is the perfect size for the growing family — plus the lush backyard has plenty of space for their young son, Hendricks, to play.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: California Bohemian (I’ve been told) with a little mid-century flair.

Inspiration: Nature. For this reason I kept the house white, because it really makes the beautiful floors, plants, and art stand out and be the hero.

Favorite Element: Probably the high ceilings, the floors, and the school-house windows. I also love that every light works, is dimmable, and is EXACTLY where you’d want it to be! This may seem like a no-brainer, but living in old apartments my whole adult life this hasn’t always been the case!

Biggest Challenge: Water bill! We still are figuring this one out. I am really cognizant of reducing our footprint, but I’m still figuring out how I can reduce water. The grass drinks a ton, and we are thinking of ways to rectify that.

What Friends Say: It’s a great place for guests—every room has a full bathroom, so you really feel like you have your own space. Plus the fridge is huge, so there’s always cold wine and kombucha ready for drinking.

Biggest Embarrassment: The holes I’ve made in the garage from being such a bad dart thrower—I don’t even make it onto the board half the time.

Proudest DIY: Hendriks’ room. I got some birch trees, and came up with a design that really highlights the room and his precious dream catcher in a way I love. Feels like art, and it only cost me $50 to make!

Biggest Indulgence: The grand piano and the saltwater hot tub. Both of us got one “indulgence,” and it’s telling of what we love to relax to. Justin—music, Me—massages.

Best Advice: You will end up in the house you were meant to be in. It was hard looking, and so many houses fell through beneath us, and we were so depressed. Then Campbell showed up, and it’s been a dream come true.

Dream Sources: I love going to local flea markets and trading posts. California is filled with artists and therefore art, and it’s awesome what you can find from local people that work with their hands. Usually, their work is hand-made and therefore very high quality, and matches my California Bohemian Asthetic. Finally, you can get people almost always to do some custom stuff for you, so it’s pretty much amazing! I love etsy for this too—I find the local LA shops on Etsy and shop there as well.
