George discovered this stunning house — just outside of Philadelphia — while helping a friend look for properties online. He works in healthcare, but has always had an affinity for architecture and design. Today, this artist-built 1959 gem is set along a creek among gardens in a setting that’s utterly captivating. But the house itself was near ruin when George found it. He saw nothing but potential, purchasing it immediately, and getting to work quickly with his pups in tow. “While builders wanted it for the land alone, I saw it as the retreat I was seeking,” recounts George. “A post and beam house that is at once warm and modern, curated spaces that are relaxed and comfortable yet cool and sophisticated.”

Furniture is a mix of old and new, high and low. West Elm and Knoll mingle and iconic pieces pair with flea market finds. Art provides swank to the walls while colorful textiles and playful patterns accent the rooms with whimsy.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Organic and modern, tailored but casual

Inspiration: Growing up in the ’70s I dreamed of that Brady Bunch house.

Favorite Element: The open floor plan and large windows with the ever-changing light.

Biggest Challenge: Finding the balance of old and new I wanted.

What Friends Say: They playfully call it the “shack”

Biggest Embarrassment: Hanging guest room wallpaper upside down and realizing it half way through but just continuing at that point.

Proudest DIY: Removing wallpaper in the laundry room and discovering an original whimsical mural of the artist and her husband who built the house in ’59. It makes me smile every time I see it.

Biggest Indulgence: Sleeping in on weekends among the trees, listening to the creek with my pups.

Best Advice: Follow your instincts, trust your eye and surround yourself with what you love.

Dream Sources: Estate sales in Trousdale or Palm Beach
