Name: Angelina Rennell
Location: La Selva Beach, California
Size: 700 square feet
Years lived in: part-time 1 1/2 years

The “Spaceship” house is owned by designer Angelina Rennell’s mother, Cynthia. She helped her mom both restore and decorate the space, and it’s 700 square feet of groovy, modern, space age style. Angelina lives in the home part of the year, and she also uses it as a backdrop for photos of her products that she designs with her brand, Beklina. With thick white walls, organic shapes, bohemian textiles and a spaceship-like shape, this California house is out of this world!

Built by Mary Gordon, a landscape architect from Palo Alto in 1969, the house may not be huge, but it certainly has personality. Angelina lovingly calls it the “spaceship” house.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Native modern

Inspiration: My mother has been one of my primary inspirations. My style, aesthetic, and visual language, is largely from growing up in her world. As a small child and onward the house was always littered with Vogue magazines, she was a shopper as well, though I’ve never had the patience for “shopping”. I.Magnin was a regular destination growing up where she could spend hours. I can remember wanting to please and connect with her, by trying to point out and find objects in stores she would like. Eventually I got very good at it. Though our styles today aren’t exactly the same, we connect on that level fluently.

Favorite Element: The walls and windows, how they curve, are so solid and thick, and the windows are like portals to another world. The house feels like a dream, not of this world.

Biggest Challenge: The walls, and making space. There’s no closets, space is at an extreme minimum.

What Friends Say: Amazing, wow!, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Proudest DIY: Knitting an entire blanket

Biggest Indulgence: Taking time for myself and organic foods

Best Advice: Just be curious. -instead of jumping to conclusions

Dream Sources: Meeting with other artists, and estate sales -giving homes to peoples treasures they can no long hold. Other cultures, how they break apart our reflex thinking.
