While some homes have natural light pouring in from what seems like every corner, others have less than you’d like. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to maximize whatever light you have in your space — from using mirrors to bounce rays around, to making your ceilings a little lighter than the walls. But accordingly to HGTV star Breegan Jane, it’s also about the curtains you choose.

In a recent Instagram post, the HGTV expert — who is known for hosting shows like “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and “The House My Wedding Bought” — shared a photo of a black-and-white dining area with brass accents. While the room itself is gorgeous, the natural light coming in through the windows makes the room airy and bright, which Jane attributes to the white curtains hanging on the wall.

“When and where possible, I capitalize on existing natural light,” Jane wrote in the caption. “One of my favorite window treatments includes beautiful white curtains hung high and wide.” Jane mentions that using this kind of curtain allows for other details in a room to shine — in this particular case, the marble flooring.

Before hanging your curtains, Jane adds that you should be mindful of the metal that you use for the curtain rod. Since the white curtains will maximize sunshine, it’s important that the rods have “coatings that will hold up to the sun’s UV rays.” Plus, you want to make sure the metal pairs with the existing metals in the room for design purposes.

So if you’re looking to maximize your natural light, think white curtains. You’ll thank Jane later.
