Insects get antsy this season, bugging out over the warmer weather, and emerge from their winter hideouts eager for spring. You’re more apt to share space as they move around and seek out new homes for the season. Instead of warily eyeing them (bracing yourself for a sting or bite), stake your claim and prevent creepy crawlies from winning your turf war.

This Weekend’s Assignment: Figure out which pests are a threat, and stop them from hanging around — or worse, infesting — your home.

Know Thy Enemy: Find out which bugs are common in your area, identify the ones you’ve already seen lurking around, and then decide which are worth a fight (sometimes you should just let them be).

Go on the Offense: Once you know what you are up against, research the best ways to rid yourself of what’s bothering you. Make traps and pesticides that are both safe and effective to use at home.

Be a Lousy Host: Create an environment that doesn’t advertise your home to bugs, insects and other pests. Make the areas inside and outside the home as inhospitable as possible by removing all lures and deterring visits. You probably won’t be 100% free of the buggers, but you can certainly cut down on unwelcome guests.
