Kamakshi Rathore and her spouse have been renting this two-bedroom apartment in Hyderabad, India, for four years. “I share this apartment with my husband, and we have been together for 20 years now. He works in a bank, while I quit my corporate career about four years ago to pursue my creative passion in the design field and build my small home textile business,” Kamakshi begins.

"I hail from the city of Jaipur, which is well-renowned for its rich heritage, crafts, and textiles," Kamakshi writes. "Personally I love country style aesthetics and nature inspires me the most. I also admire mixed styles that tell a personal story. We tend to gravitate toward earthy and neutral pallets with hints of color pop. I am neither a maximalist nor a minimalist but somewhere in between probably. Our design style reflects all of this, Indian block prints and patterns mixed with tarnished brass accents, vintage art thrifted during our travels, antiques lovingly passed on by my mum, lots and lots of plants, solid wood furniture that's both thrifted and custom made slowly one by one over a decade. Some very Indian accents woven with very French country charm. You'll find a mishmash here, and somehow it all works."

Her business is called “Deodar” and says that they “back and support indigenous crafts that embody the rich tapestry of Indian heritage but through a blend of contemporary global styles to fit our modern-day life.” And yes, their home is full of fun finds from Deodar.

While this apartment started out as “basic builder grade,” Kamakshi and her husband have transformed it with “earthy country style aesthetics with a sprinkling of India in every corner. I would call it Indiachic if that’s a word,” she writes.

"Take your time to do up your space and invest thoughtfully into timeless pieces," Kamakshi advises. "Homes evolve like us slow and steady, so do not rush into the process. Do it one corner at a time. I was always a huge fan of timeless solid wood furniture pieces that are pretty expensive, specially if you plan to buy them all in one go. Most of our furniture was collected over a decade, one piece at a time. Every year we would save to get that one great piece that we truly loved instead of investing in trendy, mass-produced furniture. We opted for handcrafted, teak, and solid wood that never goes out of style and built our collection eventually."

“This was a typical builder-grade apartment in an Indian metropolitan city, Hyderabad, when we moved in. Though structural changes aren’t permitted as we do not own the property, but the white walls gave me the perfect blank canvas to style it my way with all my furniture and collectibles from the past years. The best part about the home was its large windows and ample natural light that made us fall in love immediately,” Kamakshi writes.

"The trunk style coffee table is both functional and doubles up as storage. All my bedding goes inside this trunk coffee table. It was bought from an online seller four years ago."

“Our design style reflects Indian prints and patterns like block prints from Jaipur mixed with tarnished brass accents passed by my mum, vintage art thrifted during our travels, lots and lots of plants, and solid wood furniture custom-made slowly one by one over a decade,” she writes, explaining that there are also Indian accents woven with French country charm in earthy tones. “Mustards, whites, beiges, and greens are on repeat throughout our home.”
