Accessibility items for the home are usually designed with only function in mind. And although that’s arguably the most important aspect of these pieces, anyone living with a disability shouldn’t have to cast design and aesthetics to the wayside.

Enter IKEA: The brand just released a line of inclusive home items that are designed with both form and function at the helm. The new collection, called BÄSINGEN, blends in with existing decor but stays bold enough to ensure the pieces are easy to locate and use — making any home more accommodating without sacrificing style.

Why IKEA’s BÄSINGEN Line Stands Out

Made for the bathroom and beyond, pieces in the BÄSINGEN collection feature nonslip feet and drainage holes, plus matte finishes and thick diameters for better grip. And unlike the gray, metal pieces you might be used to seeing across accessible home items, BÄSINGEN products come in a dark anthracite color that keeps them both aesthetically pleasing and easily visible.

“There are many people who experience impactful and common circumstantial changes that can make something as simple as taking a shower challenging. Yet, we see that the home environment is often not equipped for change,” Wâtte Zijlstra, IKEA product design developer, said in a recent press release. “The starting point for BÄSINGEN was a clear need for specific product functions. Then, we widened our scope through design to ensure the products are for the many, as BÄSINGEN is created to support anyone in their daily life.”

What’s Included in IKEA’s BÄSINGEN Line?

The BÄSINGEN line features six items: two different step stools with a rail, a shower stool, a toilet roll holder, a towel rail, and a shower shelf. All items cost less than $40 and can be installed on drywall, tile, and shower walls. You may have to contact a professional to ensure installation is up to code and that the piece is as stable as possible, though.

With thick handles to help you get up and down, the BÄSINGEN toilet roll holder provides added stability and a soft, rounded silhouette. This can be mounted to the wall in four places and even features a small shelf to place and store items within reach.

The BÄSINGEN shower shelf gives you peace of mind while showering, with its sturdy hand rails and easy-to-grip matte texture. The attached shelf (with built-in drainage holes) is also large enough to hold soap, a loofah, and other everyday essentials.

Use this minimalist two-step stool in the bathroom, kitchen, and wherever else you need a step up to grab something. The railing can be mounted on either side, too, and transported from room to room.

Make showering less stressful with the BÄSINGEN shower chair, which includes nonslip feet to stay in place, helpful grippy arms, and a seat dotted with drainage holes.
