Leave it to IKEA to create a product that surreptitiously makes one of its own designs that much better. A DIY style guru is sharing a now-viral IKEA hack on Instagram that shows how many IKEA sofa owners could instantly upgrade their style — with another IKEA product, no less.

Instagram user Lucía (@nessa_lia) shared how she created a custom sectional table using an IKEA EKET cabinet and a matching cubby. It’s such a genius addition to her sofa, making movie nights all the more enjoyable. The best part? The whole project costs less than $100, when a custom modular system from another furniture brand could costs you thousands, easily.

“Such a brilliant idea,” one person commented on Lucía’s post. Another person added, “I like it too. When we had a sectional, I think it would have helped for a variety of practical reasons.”

How to Recreate This Stylish Sofa Storage System

Lucía first built the EKET cabinet in the walnut finish and installed it between two of her modular sofa sections with its door facing up. This unit comes with a shelf, which you can use as a divider inside your table or leave out entirely. And because the door has a push-to-open feature, it’s easy to pop and pull the cabinet door open to pull out any blankets, throws, or remotes that are stored inside.

Lucía then built two smaller EKET cubby-style cabinets, stacking one on top of the other behind the larger EKET cabinet. This becomes the perfect spot for books, tea, lighting, and more. Because both of these pieces are so affordable, you can recreate this DIY for about $100 (but the result looks totally custom!).

You’ll have to do some measuring before you attempt this DIY project at home to see if this exact setup will work with your couch. You can always opt out of adding the cubby in the back, or choose a different piece of the EKERT storage system that may work better for your space.

With a bit of creative thinking, you could end up with a sectional sofa table that not only looks amazing but saved
