Light filled bedroom with sheepskin rugs and wooden rectangular storage cubical at the end of the bed.

When I moved into my apartment, I wanted my bedroom to have an ultra-cozy vibe, made possible by a comfortable linen sheet set from Magic Linen, a soft quilt from Brooklinen, and a plush blanket from Lola Blankets. But the focus wasn’t just on my bedding — I also wanted my bedroom walls to get the cozy treatment.

I live in Los Angeles, a city notoriously prone to earthquakes (my neighborhood has been the epicenter of at least three this year). So hanging anything like a framed art piece or a shelf with decor above the bed is a big safety no-no. But from an aesthetic standpoint, I don’t love the look of a blank wall. A lot of Californians get creative and hang a tapestry or something soft — and I went with an abstract arrangement of IKEA sheepskin rugs.

The cozy wall decor idea came after I was looking for something soft and neutral that would add some interest to my space without feeling too much like a focal point. Also, I don’t have a headboard; I wanted a piece that would help ground my bed in space. I already had one of IKEA’s ULLERSLEV sheepskin rugs, so I grabbed that and ordered a few more. I also used the IKEA faux sheepskin TOFTLUND rug and some extra faux fur fabric from JOANN I had left over from recovering a footstool.

Hanging these rugs was super easy. I started with one as an anchor to build off of, centered over the bed, and used nails to secure it in place (since they’re so fuzzy, you can’t see the nail heads). Then I began layering the different rugs over each other until I was happy with the arrangement. I also added a faux fur accent pillow from Marshalls (mine is now sold out, but this pillow is similar) to my bed to help tie everything together.

I’ve had this furry display on my bedroom wall for over three years now, and the only downside is that it can collect dust over time. Because of that, I have to run my vacuum hose attachment over the fur rugs every month to keep them nice and clean. Overall, though, it has held up well with all of the nails still firmly intact — even with the frequent vacuuming — and adds a unique, cozy touch to my bedroom!
