The Most Stylish Sofa at IKEA Is Now Available as a Sleeper (It’s Perfect for Small Spaces!)

I don’t mean to brag, but I’m somewhat of an expert when it comes to IKEA couches. Over the years, I’ve tested (almost) every sofa at IKEA, and I even own one myself: my beloved (but now discontinued) KARLSTAD. I’ve long been a fan of the Swedish retailer’s sofa and sectional selection; the brand is always my first recommendation for anyone on the hunt for quality, comfortable, and stylish sofas at reasonable prices.

One of my favorites is the SÖDERHAMN. You’ve likely seen this modern modular icon before; its unique, sleek silhouette has made it a cult-favorite amongst interior design enthusiasts everywhere. Now, IKEA has quietly released a new version of this beloved bestseller — the SÖDERHAMN sleeper sofa — and I have a feeling the design world is about to go wild for it. 

There’s almost no visible difference between the regular SÖDERHAMN sofa and the sleeper. The newly launched sleeper sofa looks just like the original design, with the same deep seats, chrome legs, and slim back and arm sections. It couldn’t be easier to set up the bed, either: All you have to do is grab hold of the loop in the front hidden underneath the seat cushions, pull on it, and the queen size bed pops out totally ready to use. It doesn’t currently come with a matching bed kit as some sleepers do, but your average fitted and top sheets should work fine. 

The SÖDERHAMN sleeper sofa is currently available in two sizes: the 89” two-seater and the roughly 125” 4-seater sectional. Each of those sizes offers the same upholstery fabric options: a heathered beige and a solid beige. Hopefully one day the brand will expand upon these offerings as they have with the original SÖDERHAMN sofas, but for now, you can’t go wrong with beige. Both colors have a beautiful sleek and subtle warmth to them. 

The SÖDERHAMN sofa bed is still pretty new to the IKEA lineup, but I’m betting it’s going to be a popular item. Reviewers do have some complaints so far, however, citing complicated assembly and a wish for more colorways. “I checked it out in the store and loved it,” reads one review. “However, neither of the two colors currently available matches my room, mood, or personality. PLEASE ADD MORE FABRIC OPTIONS!” Another adds, “Nice sofa and sofa bed, very comfortable and easy to transform into a bed. Assembly is quite a job, and sometimes very complicated, but the result is worth it! Very happy with it.” It seems that the IKEA team has taken notice of this feedback and responded to these comments, so here’s hoping more detailed instructions and some colorful upholstery options might be coming soon. 

When it comes to sofa beds, I always worry a bit about comfort. But despite the SÖDERHAMN line’s signature thin seat cushions, the new sleeper sofa is quite comfortable, according to reviewers. One happy customer writes, “This is as comfortable as a normal SÖDERHAMN, and is the best sleeper IKEA makes.” Another says, “Stylish and functional sofa. Comfortable to sleep on with a thin mattress pad.” Although I haven’t yet tried the SÖDERHAMN sofa bed personally, I believe the hype — I have several friends who own the original sofa, and I can confirm it’s a lot more comfortable than it looks.
