This Savannah Apartment Is Like a Cozy, Rug-Filled Industrial Treehouse
Gillian Lyons tells about the home she shares with her kitten: During the pandemic I decided to move to Savannah, Georgia, from NYC to be closer to family and purchased my first apartment.
Every other apartment in the building is traditional-looking, but somehow this one had an industrial layout that just spoke to me — even though my stuff doesn’t scream industrial, from Turkish rugs to a large collection of pottery. The meshing of my stuff into an industrial space just felt right to me.
I work from home, in the animal welfare field, and wanted my space to feel bright and open — and this place does. Looking out the windows all I see are trees, and the apartment is always sunny and happy.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or fewer: Cozy, fug-filled, industrial treehouse.
What is your favorite room and why? This apartment is honestly one big room — with a makeshift wall to form a bedroom. But if I wanted to view this as separate spaces, I’d say my living space/kitchen area. It’s the perfect place to go from work to an evening at home and I love having friends over — the space honestly just works for whatever I need it for.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? I am a diehard pottery collector and the last thing I purchased was an early 1900 Roseville Pottery vase. I also just adopted a very energetic kitten so most of my pottery is hidden away in drawers while she climbs on every shelf I own — but I hope one day to have them out again!
Any advice for creating a home you love? Just be yourself. Don’t worry about being boho, or mid-century modern, or industrial. Just go with your gut, even if it seems like the space and the decor wouldn’t go together. If it works in your head, that’s all that really matters at the end of the day.
