Anyone who has lived in a college dorm, a first apartment, a rental, literally anywhere at all, will tell you that they have a long and storied history with the IKEA KALLAX shelving system — and actor Jared Leto is not immune to this phenomenon. During a pre-Golden Globes interview on Sunday, Feb. 28, with Jane Lynch, Leto admitted that his super-mod, minimalist backdrop was courtesy of the KALLAX.

“It’s straight from IKEA,” Leto, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The Little Things”, told Lynch.

The KALLAX is loved for its versatility, simplicity, and its under-$100 price tag. Comprised of eight boxed-shaped shelves, it can be used for displaying trinkets, (large coffee table) books, or a little bit of both, as Leto shows us.

The unit can either be used vertically or horizontally, and as Leto exemplifies, the units can also be stacked to create a larger statement piece. Plus, the KALLAX is available in a variety of different finishes like white, black, gray, stained wood grain, as well as a white/green combo.

The KALLAX comes in several different configurations, which is why so many people enjoy it. You can start small with the four-square cube Kallax and eventually build up to something bigger. Or, start huge with the 12-square unit to really make a statement in your space.

IKEA also sells drawer units and baskets that can be installed in any of the KALLAX models so you can hide away private things in some boxes while keeping other collectables on display.

You love the KALLAX, we love the KALLAX, A-list celebrities like Jared Leto love the KALLAX — it’s just impossible go wrong with such a simple design. And it makes for a nice Zoom background, too.
