A Cool California Bungalow’s Style Is a Perfect Maximalist Eclectic Mix
“Three years ago, after dozens of open houses, two rejected offers, and bruised egos, we were beginning to wonder if we’d rent forever,” begins Jessica Kane, a social media marketer, brand builder, and visual storyteller, who has owned this bungalow with her partner, Justin Lehmann, for three years. They share the house with their Siberian kitties, Mimi and Rosie.

“The hunt for our first home together proved to be a challenge — we wanted a three-bedroom, two bathroom, mildly spacious spot on the west side to settle for roughly the next 10 years that could shepherd us through early parenthood,” she continues. “We knew our situation was an abnormal one: being in our late 20s looking to buy a home in the first place was an anomaly (only made possible by incredible privilege and professional success), but it felt especially accentuated in a city like Los Angeles where you’re competing with bids that left our jaws on the floor. So when we saw this listing pop up on Zillow in February 2020, we pounced.”
Built in the 1950s, Jessica explains that the bungalow’s previous owner built an addition, with a large, bright primary bedroom and tons of closet space — elements that convinced the couple to purchase it. Even with the addition, the couple knew they’d want to put their stamp on the space, as well.
“I knew a kitchen renovation was in the cards, the competing shades of wood needed to be standardized, and we hadn’t determined how to use what was essentially a second living room. After we closed, multiple neighbors informed us that the house is haunted, and as the queen of Halloween, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. We’ve experienced quite a few mysterious incidents over the past few years that lead me to believe they were on to something … ” she writes.
