Name: Joyce and her fiancé
Location: West Oakland, California
My fiancé and I share a loft space in West Oakland. The space used to be an old tile factory before it was converted to six apartment units. The foyer, kitchen and living room are downstairs and our bedroom is upstairs. When my fiancé first moved in the apartment was an empty concrete box — the challenge of decorating was to preserve the character of the space but also to make it feel warm and homey.
From the street it doesn't look like much but the apartment is light filled and has lots of character. Our favorite pieces in the home are probably our textured blue couch, the light fixture in the living room (both of which we had custom made) and of course our dining room table, which my fiancé and his friend made themselves. It's made from one giant piece of solid cherry with a maple frame.
A lot of the pieces in our apartment are also reclaimed wood — our coffee table, the coat closet in our front entrance and our dining room bench. Even the frame that hangs on the wall in our living room is made of reclaimed barn wood.
We love the high ceilings, the open floor plan and the amount of natural light in this apartment, and it's the perfect size for the two of us.
