I was gifted this home that I grew up in by my mother who adopted me when I was 12 years old. I have over the years taken the unwanted and discarded to create a space that tells the story of how I found myself within these walls. I am living with Systemic Lupus and am a stroke survivor and my DIY projects from rescued materials and thrift store finds have been my saving grace.
I’ve mostly curated my rustic aesthetic through thrift store finds and rescued reclaimed wood. I am a self taught builder who uses reclaimed materials to create a worn, weathered warmth to our 1950s home. My process of creating a home on a budget is opening your thoughts to using what’s available throughout your community and the unwanted pieces of others. It has developed into a lifestyle for our family that shares a story of us built on foundation for togetherness.
We entertain monthly with friends and family and love sharing about how some of these pieces have been brought back to life. Most meals are gathered around a large table built from wood rescued from an old stake bed truck. My days are spent designing for others and creating styled content as an influencer on Instagram.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: California rustic
Inspiration: Other people’s trash, especially when it speaks to me.
Favorite Element: I love working with raw wood due to the different aging and weathering that takes place over time.
Biggest Challenge: I’m an avid thrifter so I tend to think I can always find every home decor piece that I need there. I try to only source from retailers when I truly can’t find it secondhand or if it is really special and I’m able to make it unique to my space, like the Interior Define sofa.
Proudest DIY: Our 10 x 11 kitchen that we transformed with $300. That included paint, light fixtures, backsplashes, and a new laminate floor. It took months of weekly thrift store shopping along with building the backsplashes out of wood and painting the tile to make it look similar to white subway tile.
Best Advice: “Free your mind and the rest will follow” (En Vogue)—this has been my mantra since the start. We allow our fears to hold us captive of pursuing the passion of our heart.
