My husband and I bought our first home about a year after we got married and immediately set to work on updating the living room (it’s the first thing people see when they walk through the door). The entire house was dark tan when we moved in, including the trim, so just updating the paint made a huge difference! I also convinced my husband to paint the inside of the front door a high-gloss black and love the statement it makes.
My goal in this room was to create a polished space that incorporated color and didn’t feel stuffy. I love design but am not a professional designer, so I tried to focus on what I like: blue, gold, traditional elements, modern fabrics. We were able to purchase a lot of our furniture at a discounted price from a local retailer, DownEast Home, which helped us to be able to afford quality pieces. We chose neutral furniture since I like to switch our decor up often.
As many of you know, wall art (especially large wall art) can be extremely expensive. With our room budget almost gone, I had a few sentimental photos blown up as 24″x36″ engineering prints and framed them with poster frames. Ideally we’d like to find something a little nicer someday, but we didn’t want to let our budget keep us from creating a space we love and are happy with now.
