So long minimalism, stylist Kristin Laing‘s home in Austin, Texas may be proof that colorful maximalist decor is back. From giant mural wallpaper to layers of plants, bold romantic colors, and multiple art galleries, this home has us swooning.
Kristin’s house is in the great city of Austin, Texas—home to many sought after antique stores. Her home is exploding with one of a kind finds. One of the surprise favorite additions, though, has to be the painted staircase.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Collected eclectic haute modern heirloom
Inspiration: Multigenerational eccentric family homes. I love old stuff, heirlooms, and homes that look lived in and also feel loved and respected. I also appreciate design that is free of trends and will hold up over time.
Favorite Element: The master bathroom; it’s my personal getaway.
Biggest Challenge: We have small common spaces and large bedrooms compared to homes that are being built today. As much as we love our spacious master bathroom, sometimes I’d like to trade some of that space for more seating in the living room.
What Friends Say: Say: Either “wow, there’s a lot to look at” or that it feels like a warm hug when you walk in. I take both as a compliment.
Biggest Embarrassment: We have some carpeted areas upstairs that have seen better days. I can blame it on kids and pets, but the biggest disaster (involving spilled wood stain) was completely my doing. Now we have a really good excuse to replace it!
Proudest DIY: The range hood in the kitchen. We undertook the kitchen remodel with a very conservative budget. We knew we’d need a custom hood, so I drew my vision and my husband Scott built it from the sketch. He did all of the carpentry and installation and I added the brass strip. It turned out better than I imagined! A close second is the stairway; it was carpeted and had a honey oak banister when we moved in.
Biggest Indulgence: The mural wallpaper in the master bedroom. It’s purely decorative, but completely transformed the space.
Best Advice: Get to know your own style before making big changes to your home.
