Linen designer Hilde Leiaghat’s effortlessly romantic home is full of artifacts and antiques reminiscent of her time spent scouring the local Belgian flea markets as a young girl. Starting out as an interior retail store in Los Angeles in 1991, her linen company Pom Pom at Home offers soft Belgian flax linens that are the quintessential tactile representation of hygge.

While the juxtaposition of soft dreamy linens and ornate antiques is what makes Hilde’s home uniquely her style, the bones of this historic Los Feliz house are an integral part of the home’s overall feel. Built in 1911 (the first house built on the street), the layout of the structure has not changed since its construction. It’s rare to find a home this old that hasn’t been gutted or converted to an open concept, which is probably why it feels like the soul of the home has remained perfectly intact for over 100 years. Simple, small, sectioned-off rooms combined with high-quality construction and attention to detail not only make the space feel intimate, but also give it an indescribable character that only time can manufacture.

The cherry on top of this structure’s museum-worthy appeal is Hilde’s eye for antiques and love of textiles. Adding texture with a variety of soft goods is the designer’s favorite way to add style to her home of 23 years. She attributes her style, which she describes as, “a melting pot of European culture […] combined with a cozy-American country feel” to growing up in Belgium. Being in the interior design retail business for nearly 30 years, it seems she has honed a talent for creating beautiful design that doesn’t feel staged or sterile, advising, “I don’t take design too seriously, and I like to have fun while designing a space.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: I would describe my style as comfortable and elegant at the same time. We used to say our home combined “European elegance and American comfort.” I don’t take design too seriously, and I like to have fun while designing a space. I like to think of my style as a juxtaposition of modern and classic.

Inspiration: My inspiration comes from growing up in Belgium, which has also been the inspiration for my stores and brand—simple living with influences from England, Holland, Scandinavia and more. In a sense, it’s a melting pot of European culture that I have brought with me here and combined with a cozy-American country feel. This created a little more romance and lightness by contrasting European style against our new California backdrop.

Favorite Element: Textures and textiles around the home. Finding the best textures and applying them to different rooms and spaces. That is where my passion for textiles comes from and why I created a business based on textiles. It is so easy when working with textiles to bring in different textures, a quick change that can alter the entire design of a space.

Biggest Challenge: The home was the first house on the street and built in 1911. The structure of the home has not been changed since and the bedrooms have remained as is. So, the hardest challenge was working with a historical home where the master bedroom also happens to be the smallest room in the house!

What Friends Say: I am lucky to have friends that have always loved our style and the look of our homes. Although, I think they dare not say anything else (haha!). This is why we started our business—our friends have always commented on our style and how we had a particular eye for finding unique items when visiting the Belgium flea markets. When we came to California, we remembered our friends’ comments about our style and the design of our apartment, so we decided to create a business out of that.

Biggest Embarrassment: I find myself going back to my original love for the more antique, romantic look that I had started my original business off with. It is something that is dear to my heart and although styles constantly change, it will always be something I draw inspiration from.

Proudest DIY: Finding my husband, Reza, who can do everything DIY.

Biggest Indulgence: I have to have fresh flowers in the house. Growing up, we always had them in our home in Belgium and I loved it. Flowers are such an easy way to make your home feel fresh and happy as well as giving it a pop of color.

Best Advice: Do what your heart tells you to do. Create your own home and stick to your gut, as it is often the best way to go. Also, it is always okay to mix and match, if it works for you, do it!

Dream Sources: Belgium designers, like Axel Vervoordt and Dries van Noten.
