An L.A. Rental’s Swell Style Is Rivaled Only by the Cute Dog
Name: Ashley Hosmer, my husband Matty, and our dog Mia
Location: Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,000 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years, renting
My husband Matty and I moved into our one-bedroom fourplex with our dog Mia about a year and a half ago. My husband saw the listing within an hour of it being posted, was the first to see the apartment, and made an offer without me even seeing it. He knew it was good and would go fast. It’s the perfect location for us, has plenty of street parking (hard to find in L.A.), and is a good street to walk Mia on. It hit all the boxes and has a washer dryer! We love it here and hope it’ll be the last apartment we live in before buying a home.
What is your favorite room and why? Our bedroom. Sleep and comfort are really important to my husband and me so I spend a lot of time picking the right bedding and decor items for this room. It is also home to a giant custom weaving by Sunwoven that is my absolute favorite home piece we own. We got rid of our bedroom TV when we moved here and instead have a giant cactus print. This room is our sanctuary and we love it.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Girly, plant-filled, mid-century bohemian, textural.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? Ugh this is something I think about too often; I would add a second bedroom, bathroom, and a yard. Basically I would turn our one bedroom into a home so we wouldn’t need to move. This is the best place my husband and I have lived in together. We love the location—close enough to the west side, east side, and downtown. But really we want a yard for Mia and I want a second bathroom for my husband that I never have to enter (haha!).
Any advice for creating a home you love? Fill it with things you love! I bring home goods back from every trip we go on, I shop small and support women makers and creators, and I fill our home with unique pieces that represent our tiny family. Comfort is also big for us. We are homebodies so having a comfortable couch, a big TV, and plenty of seating helps to create a home we love. Oh, and create a cohesive color palette so everything feels like it belongs.
Thanks, Ashley!
