“When I moved to LA, I finally had enough space to realize my own taste in home decor, which veers minimalist and mid-century modern,” begins fashion and beauty writer Lauren Caruso, whose articles have appeared in publications like Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, BYRDIE, InStyle, Refinery29, and more.

When Caruso first toured this apartment, a 980-square-foot West Hollywood rental, she loved the “great closet space, two bathrooms, and a guest room that moonlights as an office in the sense that it’s the place I get dressed, which is sort of my job.” She reports this apartment, which she shares with partner, Christopher Santaiti, also has a great location. “I can walk to get coffee, my Pilates class, and even most meetings. I spent more than a decade in NYC, so walkability is still really important to me,” she writes.

When it came to decorating the space, she had a clear direction. “I knew that I wanted to shop secondhand or vintage as much as possible — especially for hard surfaces like my dining table, chairs, coffee table, and credenzas,” she explains. “The mid-century market exploded in the last few years, so it wasn’t hard to scour vintage stores, Instagram shops, estate sales, and secondhand sites like 1stDibs and Chairish to find everything I needed.”

“That said, I’m fairly particular about items that enter my home — I’m not an impulse buyer and anything that costs more than $500 is a considered purchase that often takes days. Of course, this sometimes makes it difficult to shop vintage, but alas,” she continues.

“Most of the items in my current space were also in my last space, which was quite a bit bigger. When I first moved in here, I hated that the dining table was too big for the space, but over time, it’s become a makeshift desk for me and my partner, as well as the place where friends convene after work,” Caruso admits. “It’s probably the most-used area of our home, second to the living room. I also couldn’t decide on artwork to hang over the couch, and eventually decided that I preferred the empty space — especially because it’s reflected in the mirror. The living room can sometimes feel a little too manicured and too white, but my partner and I curl up on the couch and watch a movie at least a few nights per week. I have my corner and he has his.”
