You’d Never Believe That This Tim Burton-Inspired Home Was Once a Basic New Build
First-time home buyers Amber and Nate Northcutt (and their four pets!) took a “less traditional route” when finding a place to call their own. Instead of purchasing a lived-in space, in November 2019 the couple decided to build a four-bedroom house in Liberty Hill, Texas.
“We decided to do very little in terms of upgrades, so we truly bought a plain Jane, builder-grade house in a booming area right outside of Austin,” Amber says.

Passing on upgrades to their new home was a strategic decision: The Northcutts didn’t feel a connection to the offerings, but they also wanted to keep their mortgage payments low so that they could invest in their house. “Fast forward to peak COVID-19, we closed on the house on April 28, 2020, and hit the ground running,” Amber shares.
Even though the couple — who both work for H‑E‑B, a Texas-based grocer — originally bought a basic home, it’s nothing like that now. Amber and Nate both have the same taste, so they pulled from influences like Tim Burton, Salem streets in the fall, classic Disney, Downton Abbey, the spice shop in Grimm, the Harry Potter series, and deVOL Kitchens.
“I would describe our design style as a whimsical take on traditional,” Amber writes. “Eclectic and vintage with a splash of modern mixed in. When you walk into historic buildings, they feel like they have a soul, and ultimately, that’s what I want for our home.”
