My apartment was my pandemic oasis. We first moved in because it was a brand-new building on top of a marketplace and five minutes from public transportation into a larger city that I worked in at the time. You couldn’t open the windows of our last apartment, which was a deal-breaker for us. Right when we walked into this apartment, I loved all the sunlight that came in through the huge windows. Within the first week of moving in, lockdown started and, shortly after, the studio I work for sold their physical office and the entire team began remote work.

So in 2020, I was working from home and my boyfriend, Shane, was still going out every day and working through the pandemic. The stress of that time was mounting fast and we quickly decided that we wouldn’t treat this apartment like another temporary place to stay. We had a lot of fun designing the interior of our unique layout — choosing the pillows, textures, furniture, and colors. We explored how our current and future home can be a reflection of the way we want to live. I really fell in love with the concept of a sanctuary.

Apartment Therapy Survey

My style: I’d like to think it’s very warm, creative, and approachable. I love a good neutral base with a natural accent palette. Those colors calm me, plus they are timeless and easy to pair. I love cozy textures made of materials like linen and wool.

Inspiration: I’m definitely inspired by places that exude peace, relaxation, and warmth — wabi-sabi, Japandi, and Scandinavian design. There is a part of me that is very creative, colorful, and playful so I wanted to balance that out with my WFH office. There, I’m inspired by animation, anime, and bold and graphic design. We each have our areas inside the apartment where we can decorate how we like individually. I like to take inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, and conceptual designers.

Favorite element: My favorite thing about my apartment is all the sunlight that comes in through the windows. The entire front wall is curved in a semicircle shape, so strong sun comes in from all sides. The plants have all really flourished, and I love watching them grow. On the other side of that coin, my least favorite thing is the visibility at night that having huge windows offers our neighbors. I try to be diligent about using the blinds.
