This Iconic Lloyd Wright Home Is Now for Sale — Look Inside
Owning a Frank Lloyd Wright home is a bucket-list dream for many, but the famed architect’s son, Lloyd Wright, also built many prestigious, one-of-a-kind properties with distinct elements inspired by the Southern California landscape — and one of his most rare (and celebrity-loved) homes is now on the market for only the third time ever.
The gorgeous 4,386-square-foot Newman Residence in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood was just listed for sale for $12.9 million — $3.65 million more than it was last bought for in 2020. It was originally commissioned and built in 1950 for nine-time Oscar-winning composer Alfred Newman, the music legend behind the scores of films like The Diary of Anne Frank, Wuthering Heights, and How The West Was Won.
Ever since, the Newman Residence has kept up its star-studded roster of Academy Award-winning owners while maintaining a very Hollywood mystique over the last 75 years.
Citing property records, Realtor.com reports that this Pacific Palisades mansion has only publicly exchanged hands three different times, which makes this a rare opportunity to own a true home to the stars.
Who Owned the Newman Residence?
While Newman originally had the 5-bedroom, 3.5-bedroom mid-century home built, it was bought by Oscar-winner Diane Keaton in 2007 for $9.1 million.
The Annie Hall actress painstakingly restored many of its original Wright elements, including the signature woodwork and built-ins, while modernizing the kitchen and the main bedroom suite. Keaton also reportedly enhanced the Wright family tradition of blurring the lines between the indoor-outdoor spaces by landscaping the outdoor entertainment area and adding “sycamore, fruit, and oak trees,” per the listing.
Keaton sold the Newman Residence to an unnamed buyer in 2020 for $9.25 million (down from its original listing price of $11.75 million).
Inside the Newman Residence
Sitting on 1.4 private acres, the Newman Residence shows off Lloyd Wright’s distinct architecture ethos of marrying natural, organic materials with the indoor-outdoor element beloved by his father.
The brick mid-century modern home is flooded with natural light and beautiful outdoor views, thanks to the large black-framed windows running along nearly every wall in the Newman Residence.
Even the main bedroom suite on the upper floor is embellished with “walls of glass” running above the bedroom’s built-in dark wood cabinets and brightening up the bathtub in the main bathroom. The main living area also has a little sunroom nook as well as floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to the pool, a spa area, a dining section, and a brick fireplace oven outside.
In addition to numerous statement brick fireplaces throughout the home, the Newman Residence also features Wright-staple built-in wood cabinets and sofa beds, as well as several outdoor balconies where you can sit outside with a cup of coffee.
Of the five bedrooms on the property, two are detached from the main building, per Realtor.com. Additionally, there’s a separate guesthouse structure that was converted into a music studio.
In the photos shared on the listing site, hopeful buyers can also see some of Keaton’s modern upgrades, like a wall of hanging Edison light bulbs and a beautiful stainless steel fridge and freezer in the kitchen that opens up to the outdoor space with sliding glass doors.
The Newman Residence is a prime example of Lloyd Wright architecture, with some of the best influences of his father’s creations. Plus, who doesn’t want to live among so much star power?
