Her Living Room Now Feels “Like Being in a Treehouse,” Thanks to Custom Bookcases
“The tenants who were there before me had what can only be described as ‘gift shop’-themed furniture,” Rosie Dart shares about her apartment in London. As an illustrator, content creator, and director, she’s drawn to colors, shapes, and details, but even Rosie wasn’t a huge fan of the previous tenants’ decor.
Especially when their Big Ben canvas and “live laugh love vibe” decor left marks and big patches on the wall that became Rosie’s problem upon move-in. “I knew the space had great bones, especially with its incredible height, but just needed some love,” she explains.
Even with the Room’s Eyesores, She Saw Its Potential
The window frames also weren’t in the best condition and were crumbling in some spots. But the apartment had an open loft that created a very tall living room ceiling — Rosie couldn’t pass up calling it home. “I love love love the high ceilings,” she adds.
A Custom Bookshelf Adds Eye-Catching Details and Storage
The first thing Rosie did was to give the room a fresh coat of paint with Farrow & Ball’s “Wimborne White.” Then, to take advantage of the very tall ceiling, she had a custom bookcase built by Lozi Designs across the entire back wall.
“The bookshelf made a huge difference to the space,” Rosie shares. “It incorporates hidden storage along the bottom for DIY materials, camera equipment, and any other supplies.” The taller cabinets are the perfect size to hang her coats, store shoes, and keep a mop and vacuum vertical.
“Above that is a huge grid of shelves to display all of my quirky vintage objects and books,” Rosie says. A rolling ladder was also added for easy access to the books at the top, but she sometimes loves to use it to sit at the top of the bookcase and look over the whole space and out the window. “It feels a bit like being in a treehouse — just watching the world go by,” Rosie notes.
Compact Furniture Makes the Room Feel Larger
Rosie also loved the living room’s original features — including a sash window, cornicing, and a ceiling rose she’s yet to find the perfect light fixture for. The room’s huge sash window also “lets a load of amazing sunlight in throughout the afternoon,” she says. “It’s super bright, airy, and calming.”
But while Rosie had vertical space, the living area could only fit a few items. She prioritized finding a sofa that fit because she could only fit one roughly 150 cm (or 59 inches) long, “which was quite hard to find.”
When she found the Togo Loveseat from Ligne Roset, she “went for a lovely mustard yellow to keep things feeling bright and fun,” Rosie says. Then it was just a matter of fitting pieces in around the bookcase and sofa, including a DIY coffee table she made with glass blocks.
The Living Room Now Reflects Her Interests
While the bookcase wasn’t necessarily budget-friendly, Rosie thinks it’s important to weigh what’s worth the investment and what’s not. “So for me, investing a bit more into the storage unit and sofa was absolutely worth it, whilst the coffee table and extra chairs could be found much more cheaply,” she explains.
Rosie loves how her living room demonstrates her love for films and vintage finds through a retro and contemporary style. “I feel like it really reflects my fun, playful, and creative approach to life and inspires me each day,” Rosie shares.
