For as fast as kitchen trends evolve, there’s one thing that’s remained true in recent years: Homeowners can’t stop adding green cabinets to their kitchens. And I’m all for it!

Green is such a gorgeous color that can bring warmth, depth, and drama to a space (and can hide dirt well) — but although Cheylene Thongkham’s kitchen in her 130-year-old townhouse had deep teal cabinets, she was ready for a change.

They Didn’t Want a Full Renovation, but They Still Needed an Updated Space

Cheylene’s kitchen is in a terrace home with a unique layout — think galley-style kitchen combined with a small dining area. She says that oftentimes people with this type of home opt for open-layout floor plans (like this green kitchen in a terrace house!), but she and her husband didn’t feel like taking on a full renovation.

The Original Kitchen “Left a Lot to Be Desired” with the Dark Green Cabinetry

“The house had last been renovated in the late 1990s or early 2000s,” Cheylene says. “It was in decent condition overall, but felt very dated. … The kitchen featured glossy forest green cabinetry and faux yellow brick walls!”

The exact shade of the original cabinets wasn’t exactly what Cheylene was looking for, noting that it “left a lot to be desired” when the family moved in. Instead of tearing the kitchen down completely, she opted for a budget-friendly makeover that could be swapped out and changed over time.

Peel-And-Stick Upgrades Were an Easy Way for Her to Get the Kitchen She Wanted with the Budget She Had

One of the biggest changes in the space was, of course, the cabinetry. Cheylene removed the upper cabinetry altogether and wrapped the bottom cupboards in DC Fix’s sage green vinyl wrap.

Additionally, Cheylene covered the floors in checkered vinyl floor stickers. To create a backsplash, the couple used these sleek sage and off-white Claybrook tiles.

The New Dining Nook Not Only Makes the Space Feel Larger, but It Seats a Total of 8 People

A clever dining nook update made the kitchen feel larger, too.

“The seating was purchased off-the-shelf but feels like it was built for the space,” Cheylene says. “In order to fit us all in comfortably, [we] made our own custom dining table from a piece of particle board and covered it in terrazzo-style vinyl wrap.” (The new table seats up to a whopping eight people!).

Cheylene and her husband’s DIY makeover transformed an outdated room into a modern, eye-catching space that’s the perfect backdrop for cozy nights and large-scale dinners alike. To see more of the stunning home, visit the full house tour on Apartment Therapy.
