Rosalind Miller, her husband, and their two daughters moved into this 1700-square-foot London house in 2020 between lockdowns. And in 2022, they started a “tip to toe renovation,” which included infusing the space with lots of color and extending the kitchen into a chic diner area. “I saw the chance to inject my personality into the house through the renovation process, and as a scientist and academic I really enjoyed this chance for creative expression!” she writes.

The guest bedroom

“This home is definitely an extension of me — my personality in building form,” she continues. “I’m not scared of paints or colors and tried to choose colors and things that make my heart sing! It really is a joy to wander around; so many aspects of the home make me smile.”

Rosalind explains that they did a "tip to toe renovation, reconfiguring many of the rooms and adding a kitchen/diner extension."

“We have pink ceilings that give off a gorgeous glow; I’ve gone wild with RAL 6019 (a pretty shade of mint) for the kitchen windows, doors, and ceiling beams; and have shoehorned in pastel rainbows at every opportunity! The stairs are a perfect example of this, and I love that they run through the heart of the home from top of bottom.”

The paint colors in the rainbow-hued stairwell were gifted from @yes.colours and you can find the colors in this Instagram post.

But it wasn’t just color that they added to the home. “We really wanted to make the house work for us, so we added lots of clever storage — family life is messy so my mantra is ‘a place for everything.’ There are the rattan hallway cupboards in the entrance to keep shoes and coats; the cupboards in the kitchen diner with the wavy red handles, which house all of the kids’ games and arts and crafts; and finally, we moved the laundry upstairs (because hello, that’s where the dirty clothes are) and house them in a run of pastel, rainbow cupboards.”

"The kids’ mezzanine nooks that have been created by taking out the ceilings are really unique and fun," Rosalind writes about something unique in their home.

Before the family moved in, Rosalind described the house as “a little bit tired” and says the layout wasn’t a fit for their family’s needs. But today? “It feels like we have now breathed a new lease of life into the house,” she describes. “We have reconfigured the space in order to make it work for the way that we live. I would say that the style is inherently traditional but using color has allowed us to create something a little bit quirky, fresh, and different.”
