Why we have a crush on this property

A lot of classic mid-century modern homes are all clean lines and walls of glass. But this one for sale in the Midwest balances its sleek exterior with an interior that’s equal parts cozy and retro.

Situated on a leafy little plot in Madison, Wisconsin, the four-bedroom house is a woodsy escape that also happens to be within walking distance to a mall and a country club. And for bonus points, Frank Lloyd Wright’s John Pew House is a mile down the road.

This property, though, was built in 1954 by one of Wright’s colleagues, Madison architect Marshall Erdman. Aside from building eye-catching homes in Wisconsin, Erdman was an early creator of pre-fab house kits with his U-Form-It models, and began designing Techline office furniture in the late 1960s.

Inside his house on Tally Ho Lane, a grid of push-out casement windows bedecks the dining area, while the kitchen maintains a vintage microwave oven. As for new additions, the home has a recently renovated basement with a master bedroom. There’s also a walk-in closet down there, not to mention a built-in mudroom with built-in shelves, hooks, and a bench. The whole place has been freshly painted, and offers new appliances, a new hot water heater, and updated electrical systems and light fixtures.

The home is listed for $599,000 by Angela Kellesvig of Restaino & Associates, and will only be shown virtually due to the coronavirus outbreak.
