“One of the challenges of living in a newer rental is trying to bring character to the space without making permanent changes,” explained Ainsley Gardner, who’s been sharing this rental apartment in Chelsea with her partner Brandon and their cat, Betty.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Traditional Reinvented, Maximalist,
Inspiration: Nature and animals, beautiful hotels, ’70s glam.
Favorite Element: Our bone inlay dresser we found at a furniture outlet in New Jersey—it has some imperfections but we just love it.
Biggest Challenge: We are lucky that we have a fresh and modern apartment, but it lacks some of the character and charm we both appreciate in more historic buildings. Achieving architectural interest in a rental (where you can’t make changes!) isn’t easy!
What Friends Say: “You have SO MUCH WINE.” They also ask for help picking out furniture.
Biggest Embarrassment: The amount of stuff we have. You don’t want to see inside our closets… or oven… or microwave. We also have two storage units.
Proudest DIY: I repurposed an old media console as open shelving for our plates and serveware which I was pretty proud of.
Biggest Indulgence: Our rug by Caitlin Wilson. Or rent…
Best Advice: Bring nature inside! Add plants and flowers! I love mixing faux with real to make arrangements look fuller. No one ever notices. I think…
Dream Sources: RW Guild, ABC Carpet and Home, anything Kit Kemp, Land of Belle, 1stdibs… one can dream!
