Location: Upper West Side, NYC
After a traumatic ending to an 8 year relationship I was looking for a fresh start in the city to be closer to work and friends. Downsizing from a three bedroom house in the 'burbs to NYC on my solo rental budget was somewhat daunting but oddly exciting.
I set out to find the perfect space with my best friend and broker in tow. My main requirements were natural light, space, and a pet-friendly building with enough room for both me and my 35lb rescue Samantha. After what seemed like hours touring depressing studios on the LES and East Village (my preferred neighborhoods at the time) my broker suggested we take a trip to the Upper West where I would get more bang for the buck.
When we flung open the door of this 5th floor walk-up my first thought was "THIS IS NOT DEPRESSING"! Far from it actually. The space was a blank canvas, high loft-like ceilings, three almost floor to ceiling windows and loads of pre-war charm! It reminded me of a Parisian art gallery just waiting to be filled with soul. This apartment has become my sanctuary. I feel more at ease in these 500 square feet than I ever did in my previous home. I'm surrounded by things I adore, each with their own story and new memories attached to them.
My style is somewhat eclectic and layered but also clean, modern and simple (am I a contradiction?!) I love white with small pops of color. I like mixing old and new, and refurbishing vintage finds. My dining room chairs which I painted were part of my Grandmother's dining room set from the 40's. I found the flower painting above the fireplace and surrounding frame out for the trash on 72nd street. The black and white prints were picked up at the 79th Street Green Market and the feather prints and sketch above the bar at a Design Show. I loved the simplicity in the lines of that sketch. It reminded me of my new found strength, independence and freedom.
I signed the lease right before the holidays after seeing the apartment for all of five minutes. I started space planning and shopping from afar while visiting family in FL with little more than a basic floor plan (& somewhat sketchy measurements) as a guide. I'm most proud of achieving 3 distinct living spaces within my studio, including a dedicated dining area and office space. I've also gotten creative with storage; the large Ikea room divider and under-bed storage have been life savers!
My favorite furniture find is the bar which I scored on Craigslist! I love all of my art, design books and stones that I gathered on a recent trip to the California Coast which sit atop the mantle.
I love that my home is ME. It represents where I've been and what I choose to be each day moving forward. I hope this little tour brings you as much joy as I get from my space every day.
