Bright kitchen with white cabinets, a marble countertop, knife rack, jars, and a small potted plant by the window.

When I was growing up, my grandmother’s home was always remarkably clean. I always thought she followed a strict cleaning schedule or used fancy products to keep surfaces spotless, but when I finally asked for her secret a few years ago, she just laughed and pulled a metal ruler out of her kitchen drawer.

Why I Always Keep This Office Staple in My Kitchen

My grandma’s hack was simple: Whenever dust settled on her countertops or cabinets, she avoided moving it around with a rag. Instead, she used a triangular architectural ruler as a dry squeegee, “plowing” the dust directly into a dustpan in one smooth, swift motion. She swore this method was faster and cleaner than doing it with a damp rag because the dry metal edge prevented the gray sludge that happens when dust meets liquid.

When I returned home, I put her hack to the test. I took a triangular architectural ruler from my office desk and used it to clean finely ground spices (which have a similar texture to dust) from my kitchen counter. Just as my grandma taught me, I had a dustpan ready and scraped the mess in a few strokes, first going horizontally across the surface, then pushing it vertically down into the pan. I was shocked to see my counter completely powder-free with minimal effort — and without a cleaning spray.

Of course, you can follow the ruler scrape with a spritz of cleaning spray and a microfiber cloth, but it usually isn’t necessary, depending on the mess. While I prefer a triangular ruler for a better grip, the trick works exactly the same with a regular flat ruler. It’s most effective when the edge of the ruler is sharp, so metal or plastic work best.

Why I Love This Ruler Cleaning Hack for My Kitchen

I adore this simple trick because it’s so easy, costs nothing if you already have a ruler, and is totally chemical-free. In addition to cleaning the dust that settles on countertops or on top of my fridge, I use a ruler to clean up dry kitchen spills like powdered sugar, flour, or spices when cooking. My friends are always surprised when they see me pull out my ruler, but I use it so much more frequently in the kitchen than in my office that it’s found a new home in my utensil drawer.

So, the next time you spot a dusty cabinet or spill some cinnamon on your counters, take a deep breath and reach for your closest ruler. Who knew such a humble office tool could be so handy for keeping a home dust-free? My grandma did, and now you do, too.
