Honey, Please Shrink Me So I Can Live in Every Room of This (Teeny) Tiny House
We talk quite a bit about tiny houses at Apartment Therapy, but we’re about to take the concept in a new direction and show you some truly stylish rooms with very—OK, extremely—limited square footage. Case in point: the one you see above, which is not from one of our house tours, but instead inside a miniature dollhouse. Yup, the tulip table and kitchen full of Pinterest-worthy features like open shelving and cabinetry with beaded panel doors are all mini, and they’re made by blogger and crafter extraordinaire Mandi Johnson.
Johnson documents her passion for miniatures on her Instagram account @mandimakesminis, where you can see the shockingly detailed and realistic tiny items she puts into her dollhouses. Even if you don’t get excited about smaller versions of normal-sized things (although, who doesn’t?), you’ll love the detail and artistry she shows in every post.
Johnson creates many of the beautiful pieces herself, such as the abstract canvas pictured above, using materials like a saw, sandpaper, paint, and more. While this gorgeous work of art looks like something we’d see in a designer’s home tour, in reality, it’s only palm-sized. And that’s just the start of it: Johnson’s account is chock-full of bespoke items we would absolutely buy for ourselves were they life-sized.
In addition to making her own designs, Johnson has also recreated decor icons, such as the pink and red “For Like Ever” poster and the Milo Baughman-esque chairs above. She’s even collaborated with some of our favorite brands, including Article and Anthropologie. “My love for miniatures began as a child, but it didn’t truly blossom until my first beginning-to-end dollhouse project,” Johnson wrote on Instagram. “Renovating a real-life house has forced me to put this hobby on hold for a long time, but now I’m ready to get back into it in a BIG way.”
If all of this has made you want to do some tiny decorating of your own, you’re in luck. Johnson plans to open up an online shop, and we’re hoping it includes these miniature club chairs, because even the smallest homes should be furnished in style. In the meantime, we’ll certainly keep following along and wondering where we can buy a human-sized oil portrait like the one we spotted in this space.
