My Mom’s Rare Thrift Find Is Admired by All of Her Guests — It’ll Top Your Wish List
Twenty years ago, my mother won the vintage jackpot. Having recently renovated our family home on Cape Cod, my mom, the consummate cook (and hostess), was on the hunt for a rather large dining table. The table she eventually found — and the story of how she found it — have become somewhat of a legend amongst our friends and family. It’s a daily reminder that there’s really nothing quite like a true thrift store score.
Whenever I’m hunting for a piece for my apartment, I’m reminded of this story — and that sometimes, waiting for the right item is worth it, even if it means eating meals on the couch or the coffee table for a while. You never truly know when or how you might find that perfect piece, but persistence always pays off. So in honor of Mother’s Day, I spoke to my mom to get her full table tale. I’m sharing it here as a reminder that good design doesn’t have to cost a fortune; time, patience, and a bit of luck can go a long way.
The Cape Cod Cottage Got a Major Upgrade — But Where Would We Sit?
Built in the 1940s, my parents’ house is situated on one of Cape Cod’s largest freshwater lakes. It’s small, but it’s always felt like paradise. As our family grew, however, the house seemed smaller. My mother loved hosting, but there just simply wasn’t enough space for it. We had nowhere to share a meal with our guests, much less room for anyone to spend the night.
And so began the renovation. We added a second floor with a guest bedroom, a basement for storage, and my mom got her dream kitchen complete with bright red cabinets. The dining room was the best part, though. Framed by the largest window in the house with the best view of the lake, it’s truly stunning. Full of light with easy access to both the living room and the kitchen, the space itself was perfect.
But a spectacular dining room deserved a spectacular dining table… and those can be hard to find (not to mention pricey.) We were gonna need a bigger boat table.
In their search, my parents first fell in love with a Spanish-style antique at our local antiques store but came down with sticker shock from the $5,000 price tag. Months later, my mom started to give up hope of finding something truly special — until, just a week or so before we were due to host for the first time. Mom’s best friend, my Auntie Y, called: She had found the one.
In a tiny roadside antique store off of Route 6A, Auntie Y stumbled upon a solid wood, 10-foot long Spanish-style antique table. The shop owner offered to sell it for just $100. The only catch? It needed to go that day — oh, and it weighed just about a thousand pounds.
My mom was sold. For another $100, she arranged for a neighbor with a moving truck to pick it up from the store, and as soon as they got it into the space, she knew it was meant to be. Made in the early 20th century, the table features a dark-stained solid wood top with ornate hand-carved legs to match. Underneath the top? Wrought-iron details add a dramatic flair to the otherwise fairly simple design.
This table is truly the heart of the home, the pièce de résistance of the renovation — and it still earns tons of compliments to this day. The antique has held up quite well; stains, sand, and scratches only add to the charm, as my mom says. Twenty years later, she still loves to tell the story, too.
While it might not scream “Cape Cod,” the Spanish-style statement piece was exactly what my mom was looking for: She never wanted the house to feel like a “traditional coastal beach house,” in her own words. “It’s a true lake house, a cabin — not a blue-and-white, hydrangea Cape house,” she says. Though there’s nothing wrong with that look at all, my mom wanted a more casual, rustic, lived-in vibe — one that felt true to the old family cabin, too.
The moral of the story? According to my mom, the key is to “cast a wider net.” You never know where you might find that perfect piece — or if someone else might find it first. Talk to friends and family, check Facebook marketplace, troll thrift stores for as long as you need. Just like Rome, my mom’s dream home wasn’t built in a day — and that’s perfectly ok. We’re all so glad she waited for the right piece.
