Recent retiree Brian decided to downsize into this 600-square-foot, one-bedroom rental apartment in Vancouver (located in a building from 1968) two years ago. He hired Jennifer Bassett, cofounder of Twobytwo Architecture Studio, to help overcome the challenge of folding in his cherished furnishings from his last place into this new smaller, modern rental.

"This project is a reminder that meaningful design doesn’t require ownership. With a clear vision and a commitment to self-expression, even a rental can become a deeply personal and joyful home," writes Jennifer Bassett, cofounder of Twobytwo Architecture Studio.

“Larger pieces, like a china cabinet top, were reimagined to maximize floor space and maintain function — proof that creative solutions can carry sentimental value into new settings,” Jennifer begins.

Jennifer describes the apartment before designing it as having the “typical look and layout of a standard Vancouver rental apartment — efficient but impersonal, with limited storage and minimal character. Built in 1968 and with few upgrades since, the apartment offered little in the way of modern comforts or individuality.”

"My advice is to identify an area of your home where a custom storage solution could make a real impact," advises Jennifer. "In this apartment, the millwork wall added significant storage while also creating a focal point. It gave Brian a place to display his record collection and family heirlooms, blending function with personal storytelling."

But now? Jennifer says the home is “infused with Brian’s personal style and meticulous attention to detail. Vibrant colors, mixed patterns, and warm textures create a space that feels laidback yet highly considered. We thought carefully about how Brian would entertain, designing a home that is inviting, expressive, and full of character.”
