A Home in Ireland Masters Mood Lighting and Cool Decor
Name: Peter O’Toole, my partner Brian, and our cat Penny
Location: Cork, Ireland
Type of home: Mid-Terrace
Size: 1,450 square feet
Years lived in: 6 years, owned
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Traditional with a moody and dark modern rustic twist.
What is your favorite room and why? Our favorite room is our sitting room, where all three of us usually cozy up on the couch either listening to music or watching TV. We also use our bay window as well for chilling out, reading a good book, or watching life go by outside.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? If we could change something it would have to be a larger garden where we could plant fruits and vegetables. We currently have a small garden in the front, but it would be perfect if we had a larger garden in the back. Instead, we have a small cobbled fairylight courtyard.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last item we bought was a beautiful 1960s-inspired TV stand made from a dark stained ash, which is balanced nicely by our clock in the same color on the opposite wall. We had an oversized TV stand here since we bought our home and it looked completely out of place in the room so we were so happy to finally find the perfect TV unit.
Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? We thought long and hard about this one and we came to the conclusion that Fox Mulder would be most at home here. Our house was built in 1901 and has a long past and during our six years here we’ve experienced a good few unexplained occurrences. Fox’s apartment was also dark, moody, and mysterious and full of intrigue. We feel our home has similar traits.
Any advice for creating a home you love? I think it’s important you fill and style your home with objects you love so that your home becomes a snapshot of who you are. Your home should be a trailer for the movie which is your life. When we first bought our Georgian home, we were overly cautious in keeping the Georgian style in both furnishing and style. As a result, we had a home which didn’t reflect our personality in any way and had little to no connection with us. Over the past few years we’ve realized that you can still keep the beautiful character of the Georgian era but inject it with modernity and personality. We couldn’t be happier now in our home. Every nook and cranny is telling you something about us.
