When it comes to keeping your home in tip-top shape, nobody knows what you need (and what you can leave at the store) better than cleaning professionals. Not only do they spend their days working on some of the toughest messes out there, but they also go through a lot of products, so they know which ones are the best of the best and which ones won’t even put a dent in your mess. Here are the five things they say you’ll need to keep your home clean.

Multipurpose cleaner

No home cleaning arsenal is complete without Dawn Platinum Powerwash Dish Spray, according to Shantae Duckworth, home organizer and founder of Shantaeize Your Space. “Dawn is not just for tough stains and debris on dishes,” she explains. “I often use the Powerwash spray in the shower, use it to clean toilet bowls, wash the sinks, even the walls, baseboards.”

If you don’t have the Powerwash but have some regular Dawn at home, Duckworth says you can DIY your own version of the product by mixing regular Dawn with water and keeping it in a spray bottle. “If you live in a small space, this is a handy cleaning product to have because it can basically clean everything from the dishes to the toilets, walls, and more,” she says, adding that the trick to using Dawn for cleaning more than dishes is to let it soak before you start cleaning.

Magic Erasers

Just like their name suggests, these cleaning must-haves work some serious magic when used to combat old spots and stains. “Magic Erasers are perfect for any surface, especially those tough spaces,” Duckworth says. “All you do is wet the eraser and wipe away.”

Duckworth likes to use these on baseboards, walls, and garbage cans. “Did your kids draw on the table or walls? Magic Eraser to the rescue! I literally bring these with me when I work with clients because they really are the perfect tool for keeping spaces clean and fresh looking.”

Multi-surface cleaner

Brittany Holliday, a room attendant at Le Meridien St. Louis Clayton Hotel, says the hardest room to clean in any home is usually the bathroom, which is why she suggests making sure you have all your bases covered with a multi-surface cleaner like the one made by Mr. Clean. “This is a must-have cleaning product; it breaks down scum and dirt better than other products on the market,” she says, adding that she recommends a majority of the brand’s products “because they get the job done.”

Carpet cleaner

If you have rugs in your home, Holliday says you’ll want a go-to carpet cleaning product on hand in the event of any spills or accidents, like La’s Totally Awesome Cleaner. “This is one of my favorite hacks as a professional to keep on hand at home, it removes harsh stains easily with a quick soak,” she says.

Bleach and vinegar

Duckworth says that you won’t need too many other fancy products if you have both of these cleaning staples in your cupboard: bleach and vinegar. “In fact, most spots, appliances, and spaces in your home can be cleaned with bleach or white vinegar,” she says, adding that if the scent bothers you, you can always add water and some of your favorite essential oils for a unique scent.
