After Bedding, Nate Berkus Says This Is a Key Bedroom Finishing Touch
If you were to ask me to name a designer that embodies “quiet luxury” to the core, Nate Berkus would top my list. For years, his eponymous design firm has turned out tastefully upscale projects, and his own houses have all had such a layered, sophisticated look while still feeling homey. Come to think of it, Nate Home Signature, the designer’s new bedding and soft goods line with mDesign and available exclusively at Bloomingdale’s, pretty much epitomizes this aesthetic, too, thanks to its premium cottons, earthy color palette, and subtle but striking design details.
As an extension of the Nate Home core collection, this offering marks Berkus’ first foray into the world of luxury bedding, and you’ll definitely notice the quality both in terms of the look and feel of the products. “I wanted the piecework perfect, the dyes uniform, and the seaming just right,” says Berkus. To command attention on the sales floor at Bloomingdale’s, Berkus wanted to pull out all the stops, but in a thoughtful, deliberate way that feels true to his classic signature style while still prioritizing comfort. “There’s no lime green, there are no sequins,” says Berkus. “But what you will find are textures added intentionally, updated historical patterns — things that are going to withstand the test of time and still look good 10 years from now.”
Take the Broken Dobby Stripe Duvet Cover Set, for example, which updates a traditional print with a bit of asymmetrical edge, or the Linear Squares Quilt Set, which features a patchwork ticking motif that’s both familiar and fresh. You’ll also find some bouclé top of bed accessories, waffle knits, and a black-and-white chunky yarn pillow and coordinating knit throw that are Berkus’ nod to the classic Chanel tweed suit for the home. These pieces are rooted in tradition, but flirt with just enough with today’s trends to feel modern in a serene bedroom setting. Of course, with its breathable, 400-thread-count cotton percale composition, the soft sheeting stands out as well and will get better with every wash. Other duvets and additional throws and decorative pillows round out the assortment, and prices start at just $48 and top out at $448.
When asked what he thinks is key as a finishing touch in a bedroom — that is, after, you have your mattress, bed, and bedding all set (the latter possibly with Nate Home Signature) — Berkus points to bedside lighting. “I love vintage lamps with a custom shade — something that’s old and patinated, or something with dress-maker details and trim,” says Berkus. “This is what keeps a room from feeling sterile.”
